In Conversation with Donnie: Precision, Craft and the Pursuit of Perfection
This month’s highlight: Donnie, our multidisciplinary architect who specialises in both 2D and 3D design.
Over the past year, Donnie has worked alongside the team to set the standard for our drawings, bringing a level of precision and clarity that has become a hallmark of Elementa’s work. His approach is guided by form and proportion, and firmly rooted in construction and craft. Every detail matters to him, from the way a line is drawn to the way it will ultimately be built. Precision is at the heart of what he does, and the construction and installation of every item is treated as a top priority, never an afterthought.
“It is about perfection, and about bringing the design vision to life,” reflects Donnie. “It’s about capturing the values of Elementa’s clientele through clean lines and considered detail.” For Donnie, good design is never just about how something looks on paper, it’s about how faithfully that vision translates into the finished space, and how honestly it reflects the people who will live in it. Having lived in both the Philippines and Dubai, Donnie brings a rare, cross-cultural perspective to his work and if anyone understands the intricate demands that come with designing high-end luxury mansions, it’s him. His background has given him an appreciation for craftsmanship and detail from two very different worlds, and that dual perspective shows in the way he approaches every project, regardless of its scale or setting.
“One tangible project we worked on was a family mansion with more than ten bedrooms and over five kitchens one for baking, one for entertaining,” Donnie recalls. “There was an opulent spa complete with steam rooms and changing rooms, and twenty-four parking spaces. Together with the team, we crafted a complete experience that would excite the owners.” It’s this kind of ambition, he explains, that makes it so important to give outstanding purpose to every design always taking into account the demanding conditions of the residential industry, where expectations run high and every detail is scrutinised. But scale, Donnie is quick to point out, isn’t everything. Whatever the size of a project, a welcoming and intimate environment should always be ensured. “More than anything else, a home should provide comfort,” he says. At Elementa, the goal is to offer clients a genuine sensation of luxury, and to create rewarding moments within the comfort of their own home whether that home spans ten bedrooms or one.
Donnie plays a defining role in Elementa’s design process, setting the standard for the studio’s design drawings and guiding the wider team through his own example. But his role like the studio itself has changed significantly over the years. The designer’s role has evolved due to the studio’s growth and the impact of ongoing developments in technology. Designers today work within a far more complex digital environment than they once did, and have had to expand their skill sets to cover architecture, interior design and furniture design all at once. Looking ahead, Donnie sees this transformation continuing. It’s a shift that’s all about fostering creative cross-pollination between disciplines, which has already resulted in more clearly defined, more considered outcomes thanks to the breadth of the studio’s scope. At Elementa, the team remains proudly multidisciplinary, embracing cross-functional tasks as needed throughout the year a philosophy that keeps the studio agile, adaptable and ready for whatever a project demands next.
For Donnie, that adaptability is part of what makes the work worthwhile. Every project brings a new set of constraints, a new client, a new site and a new opportunity to bring precision and craft together in service of a design vision. It’s a balance he has spent years refining, and one that continues to shape the way Elementa approaches every drawing that leaves the studio. That balance is not accidental it comes from years of working closely with architects, engineers and craftsmen, and from genuinely listening to what clients want their homes to feel like, not just look like. It is this combination of technical rigour and human sensitivity that he brings to every drawing he produces and every project he oversees.
It also means that no two projects are approached in quite the same way. A 4 bedroom apartment calls for a different kind of precision than a sprawling family mansion, but the underlying principles Donnie applies remain consistent: clarity of form, respect for proportion, and an unwavering focus on how a space will actually be built and lived in. That consistency, applied across such a wide range of projects, is exactly what has allowed him to help set the standard for Elementa’s drawings over the past year and it’s a standard the whole team continues to build on. As Elementa continues to grow, Donnie’s role continues to grow with it. He is, in many ways, a bridge between where the studio has come from and where it is heading between traditional craft and the increasingly digital tools shaping the industry today. It’s that ability to hold both at once, without losing sight of either, that makes conversations with Donnie so valuable, and that continues to shape the standards the whole studio works towards.
Looking to the future, that bridge is exactly where Elementa’s focus lies. As the industry moves further into a digital-first way of working, the studio’s priority is to keep craft and technology moving forward together, rather than letting one overtake the other. New tools and ways of working will keep changing how a project comes together, but the fundamentals Donnie champions form, proportion, precision, and a deep respect for how something is actually built remain the foundation everything else is built on.
That’s the direction the team is heading in: staying multidisciplinary, staying curious about new digital tools, and staying just as committed to the craft and construction knowledge that has always set Elementa’s work apart. It’s a balance Donnie has helped define, and one the whole studio will keep building on in the years ahead.
